WhatsApp is Now rolling out video calls on Android

Whatsapp, the $19 billion app used by over a billion folks, may finally be ready to support video calls. As Android Police noticed, the feature now works for some Android users, even without an update. However, anyone can try it by installing the latest beta (2.16.318), which is up on APK Mirror. If you do so, you’ll notice a camera icon next to your contacts and will be able to place video calls provided your friends have the feature, too. Hopefully it will stick this time. A Whatsapp beta from May had video calling enabled, but the company pulled it shortly afterwards. The feature is becoming more common with chat apps — parent company Facebook’s Messenger app has supported it for over a year on mobile. Other popular apps, however, like Telegram and Signal, lack video calling for now. The feature wasn’t turned on for me in the latest release, but I was able to use it by installing the APK beta. After my colleague Nick installed it too, I was able to place a video call between France and the UK. Both sound and video quality were excellent, though both of us were on WiFi with fast (1 Gbps and 60 Mbps) connections. It’s good news for folks who can spare the data, but Whatsapp users in the developing world will probably stick with text unless they can get a solid connection. BREAKING: Former presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati arrested by EFCC

Former presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati, has been arrested. Mr. Abati, who was spokesperson to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan was arrested on Monday and is expected to spend at least Monday night at the office of the anti-graft agency, EFCC. According to Premium Times, the journalist is being questioned for allegedly receiving some money from former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.

Dangote Denies Sacking Workers

The Dangote Group of Companies has denied reports that the disengagement of 48 workers from the company was due to economic recession in the country. Mr Tony Chiejina, its Head of Corporate Affairs, disclosed in Lagos on Monday that the 36 expatriates workers formed the bulk of those disengaged. He said that the expatriates were disengaged because of job overlap, while the 12 Nigerians that were affected were in the procurement department whose services were now redundant due to growth in the company. Chiejina said that Dangote group was rather expanding its operations in spite of the recession and this expansion would fire more employments in the company.

LASU Sacks 14 Over Fake WAEC, Stealing

The authorities of the Lagos State University, LASU, has dismissed 13 of its workers for using fake West African Examination Council, WAEC, results to gain employment into the institution and for stealing diesel oil. The names of the dismissed staff were released by the LASU Centre for Information, Press and Public Rleations, CIPPR after the management of the school approved the dismissal of the staff. The LASU Governing Council at its 112th Statutory Meeting held on Thursday, 20th October, 2016, after deliberations, approved the recommendations of the Junior Staff Disciplinary Committee for the workers to be sacked. Nine of the staff were sacked for falsification of their WAEC results used in getting employment into the institution. One of the staff, Samuel Ogunwale was dismissed for fraudulently collecting of N123,950 from a student. Two other junior staff, Olatunji Olasunkanmi and Okunsanya Olashile were dismissed for stealing 200 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) each. Another staff, Matti Jemilat Adebisi was dismissed for abandonment of duty.
